ICC prosecutor knocks Security Council over Sudan

The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor says the Security Council's failure to act on Sudan's persistent non-compliance with its international obligations have damaged the credibility of both the council and the court.

Fatou Bensouda told the council Thursday that this failure has further emboldened a number of countries to allow Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to cross international borders, despite two indictments against him. She said some states have even expressed pride in disregarding the council's authority.

"These breaches undermine the cause of international criminal justice and are a direct attack on the credibility of this council," Bensouda said.

Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir, is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of genocide and war crimes for atrocities linked to the Darfur fighting. Al-Bashir rejects the court's authority.
