Hungarian police detain Frenchman suspected of homicide

Published February 23, 2016

Associated Press

Hungarian police say they have detained a Frenchman wanted for homicide by Interpol.

Police said Tuesday the 41-year-old man was among 21 migrants detained after being caught entering Hungary illegally from Serbia. Most of the other migrants said they were from Kosovo or Turkey. The man was detained on an international arrest warrant issued by Interpol's Macedonian office.

The number of migrants trying to breach Hungary's razor-wire fences on its borders with Serbia and Croatia has risen in the past few weeks from a few dozen or less to as many as 200 or more a day. On Monday, police caught 103 migrants in the border region.

Over 1,400 people have been charged with entering Hungary illegally by breaching the border fences since mid-September.
