Human Rights Watch urges Gaza's Hamas rulers to halt executions

An international human rights group is demanding that Gaza's Hamas government halt all planned executions, including that of a 28-year-old convicted of killing a child when he himself was still a minor.

Human Rights Watch alleged Tuesday that Gaza's justice system is abusive, citing complaints of forced confessions and arbitrary detentions, and that executing a child offender is "especially atrocious."

Gaza government spokesman Ehab Ghussein says all those sentenced to death were given due process.

Human Rights Watch says 16 offenders are currently in prison after receiving the death penalty. Two have exhausted their appeals, including Hani Abu Aliyan, convicted of killing a boy when he was 14 and committing another killing as an adult. Abu Aliyan was initially given two life terms, but sentenced to death on appeal.
