Hong Kong passes Beijing-backed electoral reforms that critics say will delay democracy

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong legislators have approved Beijing-backed electoral reforms that critics say will delay democracy in this former British colony.

The proposals that expand Hong Kong's 800-member leader selection committee to 1,200 people received 46 votes for and 13 against. Pro-democracy legislators who oppose the bill say the changes are too incremental and give the government an excuse to delay free elections.

Another bill that adds 10 seats to the 60-member legislature is still pending, but it's also expected to pass with a similar margin. The legislature is half-elected, half chosen by interest groups.
