Highest French court upholds 15-year sentence for German doctor in stepdaughter's death

France's highest court has upheld the conviction and 15-year prison sentence for a retired German doctor over the death of his teenage stepdaughter more than three decades ago.

The court rejected an appeal by Dieter Krombach against his conviction for "intentional violence that led to unintentional death."

Krombach's 15-year-old stepdaughter, Kalinka, died in her bed at his home in 1982. Her father, Andre Bamberski, believed the doctor gave her a dangerous injection so he could rape her, and led a crusade for justice.

A German court ruled the evidence was insufficient, but a French court convicted him in absentia. Bamberski later arranged to have Krombach kidnapped, tied up and left near a French courthouse in 2009.

Wednesday's ruling ends Krombach's legal recourse in France. He can appeal to European jurisdictions.
