Hackers attack website of the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial in Germany

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

BERLIN (AP) — Officials at the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial say neo-Nazis hacked its website, erasing a list of victims and replacing it with far-right slogans and links to Holocaust denial sites.

The Buchenwald foundation said the attack occurred Wednesday. The site of Mittelbau-Dora, another former camp nearby, was also hacked.

The attackers posted messages including "We will return" and "Brown is beautiful." Brown is a reference to Adolf Hitler's brown-shirted SA stormtroopers.

Buchenwald says it is the first such criminal attack against the memorial. Police have opened an investigation.

Both sites were back up Thursday.

An estimated 56,000 people were killed by the Nazis at the camp in eastern Germany between 1937 and 1945, among them 11,000 Jews.
