Guyana official resigns after dispute with party

A top executive of Guyana's ruling party has resigned after publicly calling for the government to oppose corruption with more than lip service.

Ralph Ramkarran has quit the governing People's Progressive Party after a dispute with colleagues at a Friday meeting where he was criticized for talking to reporters about chronic failures to stem government corruption in the South American country.

A Sunday statement by the party says efforts are being made to "engage Mr. Ramkarran on his concerns and his decision."

Ramkarran served two terms as speaker of Guyana's parliament and was one of the party's longest serving executives. He could not be reached Sunday.

His resignation comes a couple of days after the director of Guyana's state television network abruptly resigned after an audit revealed irregularities.
