Gunmen kill opposition lawmaker in Mozambique

Published September 23, 2016

Associated Press

A provincial lawmaker from Mozambique's opposition movement has been killed by gunmen, jeopardizing peace efforts in a country where sporadic political violence has hurt an already struggling economy.

Zitamar News, an online agency based in Mozambique, reported Friday that Armindo Antonio Nkutche was shot five times while walking to his house in Moatize town in Tete province on Thursday.

Tete is a stronghold of the opposition Renamo group, whose militants have carried out attacks in recent months amid tension with Mozambique's ruling Frelimo party. The two factions fought each other in a civil war that ended in 1992.

There has been no claim of responsibility for Nkutche's death, which could undermine a shaky peace process that includes international mediators.
