Guantanamo war crimes court changes sound system to ease fears of eavesdropping

The official in charge of the sound system at the Guantanamo Bay war crimes tribunal says the microphones have been changed to address fears of defense lawyers that private conversations are being monitored.

Courtroom technology manager Maurice Elkins says the defense team microphones will no longer be live unless they are manually activated.

The change was made after lawyers in the Sept. 11 case said the highly sensitive microphones were apparently capable of picking up even whispered private conversations they have with their clients and each other.

Elkins testified Tuesday in a pretrial hearing for the five Guantanamo Bay prisoners charged with planning and aiding the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Defense lawyers believe government officials have been monitoring private conversations and are seeking additional changes.
