Germany charges Syrian with UN observer's abduction

German prosecutors say they've charged a 24-year-old Syrian man with war crimes for allegedly taking part in the kidnapping of a United Nations observer in the Damascus area in 2013.

Prosecutors said in a statement Friday that Suliman A.-S., whose full last name wasn't given in line with privacy laws, was arrested in the Stuttgart area and his apartment was searched.

Prosecutors say the observer was abducted Feb. 17, 2013, by the "terrorist organization Jabhat al-Nusra," who demanded a ransom. He escaped eight months later.

The suspect is accused of helping guard the prisoner from March to June 2013 for the group, al-Qaida's branch in Syria also known as the Nusra Front.

Prosecutors did not say when the suspect came to Germany and weren't immediately available to clarify.
