German state intelligence official resigns over shredded files related to far right probe

A state official in Germany says a top state intelligence chief has resigned after files were shredded that could have been relevant to a nationwide probe of a far-right terrorist group.

According to the German news agency dapd, Berlin Interior Minister Frank Henkel told a parliamentary committee Wednesday the state's domestic spy chief, Claudia Schmid, had resigned.

Schmid came under fire last week after her agency mistakenly shredded dozens of files on far-right extremists. On Tuesday she acknowledged that files on the far-right "Blood and Honor" group were also shredded in 2010.

None of the files, however, appear to relate to the far-right National Socialist Underground, which is suspected of killing 10 people. Four other top Germany security officials have resigned this year due to blunders in the NSU investigation.
