German official in Turkey for talks amid post-coup tensions

Published August 08, 2016

Germany has sent a deputy foreign minister to Turkey for talks amid tensions between Ankara and European countries following the failed Turkish military coup.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Sawsan Chebli said Monday that Deputy Foreign Minister Markus Ederer was meeting his counterpart in Ankara and visiting the Turkish Parliament to view damage caused by the coup.

The Turkish government has bristled at criticism of the scope of its crackdown following the aborted July 15 coup and has complained of a lack of support from the West.

Chebli said Ederer "will make clear that ... we stand in solidarity with Turkey and we see what situation it faced." But Berlin also is making clear that "for all Turkey's justified interest in working through the coup, the rule of law must be preserved."
