Friend says ex-Guantanamo detainee weak from hunger strike

A friend of a former Guantanamo detainee resettled in Uruguay says Abu Wa'el Dhiab is weak from a hunger strike and could need to be hospitalized.

Dhiab is demanding that he be allowed to leave Uruguay.

It's not clear when Dhiab began his hunger strike. But Dhiab's friend Jorge Voituret said Monday that the former prisoner stopped drinking water Friday.

Dhiab went missing from Uruguay for weeks earlier this year, alarming officials in neighboring countries before he resurfaced in Venezuela. He was deported back to Uruguay last week.

Voituret says Dhiab is upset because a Uruguayan government-appointed NGO owes him three months of aid.

The government has provided social services and financial support to Dhiab and five other former Guantanamo detainees who were invited to resettle in 2014.
