French Troops to Join UN Operations in Ivory Coast

PARIS -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy has authorized French troops to participate in United Nations operations aimed at protecting civilians in Ivory Coast.

In a statement Monday, Sarkozy's office said the request for French help in neutralizing embattled Ivorian leader Laurent Gbagbo's heavy weapons came from the U.N. secretary general.
