French customs officer killed in firefight with arms trafficking suspect in southern city

Published November 23, 2015

Associated Press

Police say a French customs officer has died in a firefight with a suspected arms-trafficker in the southern coastal city of Toulon.

Police said the customs officer was killed in an apartment while trying to arrest the suspect. Two other officers were injured. The suspect was later taken into custody.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, paying homage to the dead officer, said the country would continue its fight against arms trafficking. After the Nov. 13 terror attacks in Paris, the government said it was renewing its commitment to countering illegal weapons sales in France, where firearms are tightly controlled.
