Former Mexican politician Humberto Moreira detained in Spain

Published January 15, 2016

Associated Press

Spanish police say a prominent former Mexican politician has been detained at Madrid's airport by anti-corruption officers and is scheduled to appear before a judge.

An official with the country's national police says former Institutional Revolutionary Party chief Humberto Moreira was taken into custody based on a Spanish arrest warrant.

Moreira was scheduled to appear before a judge Friday evening.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of police policy and had no other details about why Moreira was sought by Spanish anti-corruption officers.

Moreira resigned in 2012 from his post heading the PRI under the cloud of a $2.6 billion state government debt that accumulated when he was governor of the Mexican state of Coahuila.

The debt was financed at least in part by falsified documents.
