Former Mexican governor detained in corruption case

Authorities have detained a former Mexican governor who is being investigated for allegedly embezzling millions of dollars from state coffers in a case rife with reports of extravagant personal spending.

Federal prosecutors who were questioning former Tabasco Gov. Andres Granier say they detained him Friday based on a request from Tabasco state prosecutors.

The Attorney General's Office said in a statement that federal prosecutors have that opened an investigation but have not charged him.

Granier's former treasurer, Jose Saiz, was arrested last Saturday as he tried to cross the border into the United States. Police found 88.5 million pesos, about $7 million in cash, in an office used by Saiz.

The state's current governor has accused Granier of plunging the state into debt by squandering and embezzling millions of dollars.
