Former Israeli PM enters courtroom to hear verdict

A smiling former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has entered a Jerusalem courtroom to hear the verdict in the corruption trial that forced him from office.

If found guilty in Tuesday's session, he will become the first Israeli prime minister convicted of a crime that carries a prison term.

He has maintained he has not committed any wrongdoing. But he was forced to step aside as prime minister after he was indicted.

The verdicts cover three separate cases: illegally accepting funds from an American supporter, double-billing Jewish groups for trips abroad and channeling state grants to companies linked to a close friend.

The charges were filed after he became prime minister in 2006, but stemmed from his time as mayor of Jerusalem and later as a Cabinet minister.
