Former Brazil editor must serve murder sentence

Published November 17, 2014

Brazil's top court has ordered the jailing of a former editor of one of the country's biggest newspapers for murdering his ex-girlfriend nearly 11 years ago.

The Supreme Court says Antonio Marcos Pimenta Neves must serve his 15-year sentence after running out of appeals. The 73-year-old former journalist was convicted in 2006 but stayed free during numerous appeals.

Neves was the managing editor of the newspaper Estado de S. Paulo in 2000 when he shot 32-yeard-old Sandra Gomide to death. She was a former editor of the paper's business section who had ended their relationship shortly before she was slain.

Neves' whereabouts are not known and his lawyer did not return calls seeking comment on Tuesday's court ruling.
