Flooding Kills 2, Leaves Thousands Homeless in Kenya

Published January 07, 2015

El Nino storms have caused major flooding in parts of Kenya's coastal regions, killing at least two people and leaving thousands homeless, Sky News reported.

The heavy rains follow a devastating drought which caused a food crisis in the east African country.

In Magarini District some communities have been without food or safe drinking water for days after their villages were cut off by the floods.

Dr. Anisa Omar, the director of Public Health and Sanitation in Coast Region, said waterborne diseases are now a major concern.

"So far, the biggest problems we are faced with are diarrheal diseases," said Omar, Sky News reported.

"With all the water around we expect the mosquito population to increase and there might be an upsurge of malaria."
