Finnish strikers protesting government budget cuts shut down ports, public transport

Published September 18, 2015

Associated Press

A strike in Finland has shut down ports nationwide and halted public transportation as workers protest government budget cutbacks after labor talks collapsed.

Finnair, the national carrier, has cancelled 16 domestic flights Friday and airport authorities say delays could be expected.

Trains and city buses have stopped running. However, ferries, including those to Sweden and Estonia, are running normally. Some shops are expected to be closed during demonstrations later in the day in Helsinki and major Finnish cities.

Strikers are protesting government cutbacks, including limits to holiday benefits and overtime pay. Talks on a collective agreement on wages and working hours have collapsed.
