Explosion ejects manhole cover, hurts 5 in Brazil

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

An iron manhole cover ejected by an underground power explosion soared feet into the air and then smashed into a taxi, injuring its driver in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.

A police officer says that four passers-by also received minor injuries following Friday night's explosion in a network of power transmission lines and gas pipes.

The officer says that the blast hurled the manhole cover several feet (meters) into the air.

He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media.

The official says it appears that the blast was caused by a short-circuit.
