Exiled Turkmen man jailed in Belarus, awaits extradition

Published August 05, 2016

The Border Guard Committee of Belarus says it has detained a Turkmenistan-born Swedish man and is preparing to extradite the former journalist to Turkmenistan which he fled more than a decade ago.

The committee's Alexander Tishchenko said on Friday that Chary Annamuradov was detained last month as he flew into Belarus since his name was on a wanted-list shared by several former Soviet republics.

His lawyer said Belarusian authorities are now preparing for his extradition to Turkmenistan where he is wanted for fraud.

Annamuradov, who investigated drug trafficking, was sentenced to 18 years in prison in Turkmenistan in 1991 for drug possession. He was released after serving a third of his sentence. He fled the country and was granted political asylum in Sweden in 2002.
