Ex-Turks & Caicos premier freed on bail by British territory's top court as he fights charges

Published January 08, 2015

A former premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands has been released on bail by the British territory's top court.

Michael Misick is facing charges of money laundering and conspiracy to receive bribes and defraud the government during his time in office. He has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing while serving as premier from August 2006 to March 2009.

Misick was arrested in Brazil in December 2012 at the request of Britain's government. He was extradited to the Turks and Caicos last Tuesday.

Prosecutors say he was released from a prison Monday, about a week after a magistrate refused his request to be freed on bond.

Misick's lawyers appealed to the Supreme Court, which ordered his release. The court said terms of Misick's bail should not be made public.
