EU's Kosovo official urges integration of Gypsies

The top European Union representative in Kosovo has urged authorities to do more to integrate the country's minority Romas, also known as Gypsies.

Pieter Feith said in a statement sent Friday on International Roma Day that the Roma community "lives in conditions that are unacceptable in 21st century Europe."

The Romas were a target of revenge attacks by ethnic Albanians in 2004, forcing many to flee their homes. Since then, the ethnic Albanian authorities have invested in the reconstruction of damaged houses.

Many of them are subject to forced returns from European countries where they escaped as illegal immigrants. Kosovo is one of Europe's poorest regions.

Human rights watchdogs have frequently appealed to European governments to stop returning Romas to Kosovo and the region.
