EU urges Bosnian Serbs to agree to plan that would bring Bosnia closer to EU membership

Published June 10, 2015

A European Union commissioner is urging Bosnia's Serbs to agree upon reforms that would bring the country closer to membership in the 28-nation bloc.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn says he has cancelled a Thursday trip to Bosnia, where he was to attend a round table concerning the EU reform agenda.

Although Bosnia's Serb, Muslim and Croat leaders signed a joint declaration in January expressing readiness to implement all EU reforms, the Bosnian Serbs revoked their commitment, saying they don't agree with some of the EU demands. This represents a major setback on Bosnia's EU path.

Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik said the agenda others in Bosnia have signed "does not exist for us." His government refuses to privatize the energy sector and objects to other reforms in the document.
