Ethnic clashes between Arabs and Berbers kill 2 in Algerian oasis city of Ghardaia

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

The Algerian state news agency says clashes between rival gangs of Arabs and Berbers left two dead near the southern oasis city of Ghardaia.

The clashes involving fire bombs, flaming tires and thrown stones took place in the nearby village of Berriane. Dozens of police were also injured.

The picturesque region was plagued by clashes between youths from the two communities for several months earlier this year, resulting in more than a dozen deaths.

The latest incidents began when five young men from the local Berber community, known as Mozabites were arrested.

On Sunday, residents attacked the tribunal wounding three policemen.

Hundreds of police held a demonstration of their own to protest the continued attacks before the latest clashes erupted.
