England were 119 for four in reply to Australia's first innings 527 for seven declared, a deficit of 408 runs and still needing a further 209 runs to avoid the follow-on, at lunch on the third day of the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Kevin Pietersen was 33 not out and Ian Bell four not out.

Ashes-holders England lead the five-match series 2-0.
