Dutch foreign minister says aid worker kidnapped in Afghanistan has been released

Published September 10, 2015

Associated Press

The Dutch foreign minister says an aid worker kidnapped in June in Afghanistan has been released after 81 days and is in good health.

Foreign Minister Bert Koenders said Thursday night that Anja de Beer, who was seized June 22 by armed men in Kabul, was "doing well under the circumstances" after her release and has spoken to her family from the Dutch Embassy.

It remains unclear who kidnapped the experienced aid worker, and Koenders didn't comment on the circumstances of her release.

Koenders told Dutch broadcaster NOS that the government had no direct contact with the kidnappers but was in close contact with Afghan authorities and the aid agency she worked for about De Beer.
