Drug trafficking, production up in West Africa, UN says

The United Nations says drug trafficking is a growing problem in West Africa, as the production of synthetic drugs and their use increases in the region.

The International Narcotics Control Board, the control body for the U.N. drug conventions, said in a report Wednesday that West Africa has become a focal point for trafficking amphetamine-type stimulants to East and Southeast Asia. The region has for some time been a major transit point for drugs from South America to Europe.

The U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime said that a significant amount of amphetamine-type stimulants have been seized in West Africa over the past year. The organization called on African governments to comply with international law, saying that impunity and corruption both result from and facilitate further drug-related crimes.
