Dominican, US agents seize cocaine haul, arrest 3

Published November 20, 2014

A collaborative effort between Dominican and U.S. law enforcers has led to the seizure of a ton of cocaine and the arrests of three Colombians.

Dominican anti-drug agency director Rolando Rosado Mateo says the Colombian suspects were stopped in a speedboat off the southern coast of the Caribbean country.

It's the second largest seizure off the Dominican coast so far this year. Three Venezuelans were arrested in March as they tried to unload 1.5 tons of cocaine from a speedboat in a nearby town.

Rosado said Monday that U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents brought the Colombians to Puerto Rico.

U.S. officials estimate that 4 percent of South American cocaine bound for the U.S. travels through Hispaniola island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
