Dominican Republic police question 16 from US, 7 Dominicans after prostitution raid near Sosua

Published May 21, 2015

Associated Press

Police in the Dominican Republic say they questioned 16 U.S. citizens following a raid on a home that authorities say was being used for prostitution.

The raid took place in Agua Clara near the beach town of Sosua on the country's north coast. A statement issued by local police on Thursday says seven Dominicans were also held for questioning after the raid the previous day.

Police say 29 prostitutes were found at the home and some were younger than 18.

Authorities have not identified any of the people who were detained and prosecutors decline comment because the case remains under investigation.

Prostitution is legal in the Dominican Republic, but anyone hiring a prostitute or running a brothel can face charges of sexual exploitation. Arrests, however, are rare.
