Damage to India canal highlights Delhi water vulnerability

Officials say the water supply to New Delhi's 18 million residents will be limited until engineers can fully repair a canal link that was broken during protests in a neighboring state.

Delhi Water Minister Kapil Mishra says partial water supplies have been restored in the northern and central parts of the Indian capital, and will hopefully reach western Delhi by Tuesday evening.

In the meantime, he says 70 water tankers have been sent to western neighborhoods with rations.

The destruction of the Munak canal link by protesters over the weekend in Haryana state has highlighted New Delhi's extreme water vulnerability.

The canal, which channels water from north Indian rivers, accounts for about 60 percent of New Delhi's water supply.
