Cyprus defense minister Tasos Mitsopoulos dies a day after suffering brain hemorrhage

Doctors say Cyprus' defense minister has died a day after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

Nicosia General Hospital Intensive Care Unit chief Theodoros Kyprianou told reporters that Tasos Mitsopoulos died Saturday despite efforts to save him.

Mitsopoulos was rushed to hospital Friday after colleagues reportedly found him unconscious in his office.

Mitsopoulos moved to the defense portfolio from the communications ministry just last week after a mini-reshuffle from President Nicos Anastasiades.

The 48-year-old Mitsopoulos studied law in Greece and was a member the Cypriot parliament from 2006 until 2013 when he joined the Cabinet.

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides praised Mitsopoulos as a man of steadfast integrity who never gave in to the temptations of power.

He's survived by his wife Katerina, a daughter and a son.
