Croatia extradites ex-spy to Germany over dissident's 1983 murder

A former top spy in Yugoslavia's feared secret service has been extradited to Germany, where he is wanted in connection with murder of a political dissident 31 years ago.

German federal prosecutors say 72-year-old Zdravko Mustac was extradited Thursday from Croatia, whose citizenship he now holds. Prosecutors say he is suspected of "colluding in the murder of Yugoslav dissident Stjepan Durekovic," who was killed on July 28, 1983, near Munich.

Earlier this year, Croatia extradited Josip Perkovic, a subordinate of Mustac's at Yugoslavia's secret service, which was notorious for eliminating opponents of the communist regime.

Croatia initially refused to extradite Perkovic, who denies any role in the murder. Under pressure from Germany and the European Union, Croatia later agreed to amend its laws so that its citizens could be extradited.
