Crews put boom around grounded freighter

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

U.S. crews have laid a containment boom around a ship that grounded just a few feet off an outlying Puerto Rican island.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday that more than 800 feet of boom have been placed around the Honduran-flagged "Jireh" freighter off Mona Island to minimize any fuel spill.

Crews have found no signs of pollution but they have been unable to remove any fuel from the ship due to choppy seas.

U.S. and Puerto Rican investigators have also been trying to determine the nationalities of roughly 60 illegal migrants who were aboard the boat when it crashed Thursday into the reef off Mona, an uninhabited island off Puerto Rico's west coast.

A Puerto Rico-based spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection didn't return calls Sunday seeking updates on the investigation.
