Controversial religious procession barred from entering Kiev

Ukraine's interior minister has ordered police to bar a major religious procession from entering the capital, Kiev, after police found ammunition planted along the planned route.

Arseniy Avakov said on Tuesday the procession would not be allowed in because of security concerns.

Thousands have been marching in the Holy Cross procession led by the Ukrainian branch of the Russian Orthodox Church from the country's east and west since the beginning of July. They were to meet in Kiev later this week to mark the baptism of what is now Russia and Ukraine in the 10th century.

Orthodox Christians in Ukraine adhere to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian branch of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Ukrainian nationalists on Monday blocked the procession from entering Kiev calling them "agents of Moscow."
