Colombian authorities say sister of Northern Valley drug cartel's founder slain by gunmen

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Authorities say the sister of a man who founded Colombia's Northern Valley drug cartel has been killed by gunmen.

Luis Alberto Cantillo of Colombia's National Police says Lorena Henao was shot to death on a ranch on the outskirts of Armenia, a city in northeastern Colombia.

He says two suspects have been arrested.

Henao's brother Orlando was one of the founders of the Northern Valley cartel before his assassination in 1998. She was married to Ivan Urdinola, who later became leader of the cartel.

The Northern Valley cartel rose to prominence during the 1990s, after the Cali Cartel and the Medellin Cartel broke up.
