Chinese man gets death sentence for explosions outside party office in northern city

Published January 08, 2015

Chinese state media say a man has been sentenced to death for setting off a series of small explosions that killed one person and injured 17 others outside the provincial headquarters of the ruling Communist Party in the northern city of Taiyuan.

The official Xinhua News Agency says the Taiyuan Intermediate People's Court sentenced Feng Zhijun on Monday after finding him guilty.

It says Feng told the court he would not appeal. All death penalties must be reviewed by China's supreme court.

Xinhua did not say why Feng set off the explosions last November, but said he once served nine years in prison for burglary.

Earlier reports said it was a revenge attack, but did not explain Feng's grievances.
