China unveils plans for bigger producers of infant formula following quality scandals

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

China's government has announced plans to build up a handful of large producers of infant formula as it tries to revive an industry that is reeling from a product quality scandal.

The plan issued Friday by the Cabinet said dairies that meet quality and production standards will receive unspecified financial support.

Beijing has been trying to rebuild its infant formula industry since a 2008 scandal over tainted milk that killed at least six babies and prompted many parents to switch to imported brands.

A Cabinet statement said the government wants to restore consumer faith in Chinese formula brands and will enforce "strict quality management."
