A retired northern China senior police chief has been sentenced to death after being convicted of murdering his mistress.

The Taiyuan city Intermediate People's Court says in a statement that 64-year-old Zhao Liping was sentenced Friday. He was also convicted of bribery and possessing firearms and explosives

Zhao presided over police affairs for the sprawling Inner Mongolia region from 2005 to 2012, and was a vice chairman of its official political consultation body before his retirement.

The court statement says Zhao fatally shot his 28-year-old mistress, identified only by her surname Li, and then burned her body.

It says he also used his position as the top police officer in Inner Mongolia to "seek benefits" when promoting people and illegally received 24 million yuan ($3.5 million).
