Chile: Long-secret Pinochet will silent on wealth

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

There's disappointment in Chile among those hoping a long-secret will left by Gen. Augusto Pinochet would help the government recover some of the millions of dollars he allegedly stole from the state before his death in 2006.

The dictator's final will was unsealed by a court on Wednesday, but it gave no clues to the size or whereabouts of his fortune. Attorney Alvaro Quintanilla told reporters that it only changed the name of the estate's executor. So now he'll turn his attention to an earlier Pinochet will from the year 2000 that is still sealed.

Quintanilla represents an independent government agency that protects the interests of the state. He plans to try to persuade the courts to open Pinochet's earlier will in hopes of finding the money.
