Central African Republic capital witnesses new upsurge in sectarian violence after calm

After a period of relative calm, violence has flared anew in the Central African Republic with angry demonstrations against Chadian peacekeepers, shootouts at checkpoints and the destruction of a mosque.

After shootings overnight involving Chadian peacekeepers, hundreds demonstrated near the airport Friday calling for the resignation of the Muslim president, who swept to power at gunpoint in this predominantly Christian country in March.

At a nearby checkpoint, three bodies lay in the sun after being shot by Congolese peacekeepers who said they had attacked them in the morning.

The Community Hospital struggled to deal with 35 wounded and two dead, mostly from a Muslim neighborhood who said they were attacked by a Christian militia.

An angry crowd demolished Gobango mosque in another neighborhood of the capital.
