Car bomb attack in Turkey's southeast kills 1, wounds 2

Published June 23, 2016

Associated Press

A Turkish official says a civilian was killed and two soldiers lightly wounded in a bomb attack against a gendarme outpost in southeast Turkey.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government protocol, said initial reports indicate a car bomb was detonated by the outpost in Omerli, a town in Mardin Province.

The civilian was a truck driver who was passing by in his vehicle.

Southeast Turkey has become the scene of regular clashes between security forces and fighters linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.

The fighting often coincides with extended curfews imposed by authorities. It has led to the displacement of thousands of people and vast damage to infrastructure in flashpoint districts.

Turkey, along with its allies, considers the PKK a terrorist organization.
