Canada to seek UN Security Council seat for 2021-22

Published March 17, 2016

Associated Press

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada will seek a two-year seat on the United Nations Security Council starting in 2021.

Trudeau, who took office in November, cited his administration's renewed commitment to engaging in world affairs and to ideals dear to the U.N., including human rights and diversity.

Canada last held a seat on the 15-member Security Council in 2000.

"It's time for Canada to step up once again," Trudeau said.

Trudeau made the announcement Wednesday at the U.N.
