Canada has transfer request for Guantanamo Bay detainee

Canada is considering repatriating the last Western detainee at Guantanamo after receiving a completed transfer application, the government said Wednesday.

Canada's public safety ministry said in a statement that a decision will be made in accordance with Canadian law.

Omar Khadr, 25, pleaded guilty in 2010 to killing a U.S. soldier and was eligible to return to Canada from Guantanamo Bay last October under terms of a plea deal.

A Canadian government official says the U.S. asked Canada for a "diplomatic favour" by repatriating Khadr, and Canada previously agreed to look favorably at the request. The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, spoke on condition of anonymity.

The official said that if Canada does not look at bringing Khadr back now, in eight years he would be able to walk onto Canadian streets a free man.

The official said the U.S. was looking to get Khadr out of Guantanamo and was willing to fly him to Canada.
