Cambodian monks urge king to postpone parliament opening until parties resolve differences

Buddhist monks have joined the debate over Cambodia's election, calling on the king to postpone the opening of parliament.

About 200 monks prayed for peace Thursday in Phnom Penh, the capital, after being stopped at a police roadblock as they marched to King Norodom Sihamoni's palace. They said he should not convene the National Assembly until differences are resolved between the ruling Cambodian People's Party, which won the July 28 election, and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, which charges it was cheated by election fraud.

The monks' position echoes that of the opposition, which says it will boycott the scheduled Sept. 23 opening of the assembly unless an independent commission is established to investigate alleged election irregularities. The two parties have been holding talks to bridge their differences.
