Briton arrested at Heathrow in German tax evasion probe

German prosecutors say a British man suspected of evading 125 million euros ($133 million) in value-added tax has been arrested at London's Heathrow airport in an investigation into organized tax fraud.

Frankfurt prosecutors said the 42-year-old, whom they didn't identify, was arrested Tuesday evening after arriving from Abu Dhabi. They said Friday that they have filed an extradition request.

The prosecutors are investigating a value-added tax fraud scheme involving a chain of transactions with carbon dioxide emissions certificates. They said that the man now arrested is believed to be one of the main organizers, used several aliases and was known within the group as "Batman."

The alleged tax evasion dates back to 2009 and 2010. Thirteen people so far have been convicted as a result of the investigation.
