Brazil's president says there will be no amnesty for politicians who have taken illegal campaign contributions as he tries to quell growing discontent with his government.

President Michel Temer was already deeply unpopular with many Brazilians and he is now facing a growing political crisis amid allegations of misuse of power by him and his administration.

With the leaders of both houses of Congress at his side, Temer told reporters Sunday that anti-corruption measures before Congress will not let off the hook politicians who have hidden or not declared campaign contributions. Many Brazilians are concerned the legislation to toughen prosecution of corruption might perversely offer amnesty to politicians who had previously engaged in the practice.

Opposition groups are planning protests later Sunday calling for Temer's ouster.
