Brazil: Striking teachers, police violently clash outside state congressional building

Police in southern Brazil fired rubber bullets, stun grenades and tear gas at striking teachers as they tried to storm a state congressional building where leaders were debating cutting pensions for teachers and other civil servants.

Local media at the scene Wednesday reported that dozens were injured in the melee — though it wasn't possible to verify exactly how many protesters or police were hurt. Police say they don't yet have any figures for the numbers injured.

Live TV images showed hundreds of protesting teachers fleeing as stun grenades and tear gas canisters exploded in tightly packed groups.

The conflict took place in the city of Curitiba, in the southern Brazil state of Parana.
